Rock to Recovery

Rock to Recovery

Rock to RecoveryOffering a wide variety of therapeutic approaches in the course of treating substance use and mental health disorders is a core belief of the treatment team at our facilities. A one-way approach will not work for everyone. This is why Sobriety Options is proud to offer Rock to Recovery; it’s a unique form of music therapy that is held weekly in treatment centers and it has shown to be effective in helping those with substance use disorders and mental health disorders improve their lives by writing, playing and performing music as a group. Does it really work?

According to a journal article published in 2017 in the National Library of Medicine titled Music Therapy for People with Substance Use Disorders,

“At a neurobiological level, music that provokes peak experiences stimulates neural reward and emotion systems similar to those that are activated by drugs of abuse. Due to these similar patterns of neural activity, music has the potential to promote positive mood states, including euphoria, and to enable emotional regulation. As music provides a means of promoting positive mood states, it may consequently buffer against the risk of relapse that is associated with negative mood states. Furthermore, pleasurable music can promote the release of dopamine to positively affect the reward system, and can inhibit activity in areas of the limbic system in a way that inhibits transmission of pain perception.”

About Rock to Recovery

Rock to Recovery was founded by Wesley Geer, CADC I. Wesley is a world renowned musician playing for bands such as Hed P.E. and Korn. Throughout his career, Wesley has played to crowds in excess of 80,000 in over 42 countries. As a person in recovery himself with a certification in alcohol and drug counseling, Wesley has assembled an incredible team that travels to treatment facilities, VA hospitals, and Air Force Wounded Warrior programs in California, Oregon and Tennessee. In total they deliver a unique form of therapy to over 5,000 people per month. In our sister facilities, Rock to Recovery meets with clients weekly.

What Rock to Recovery Delivers

Each week Rock to Recovery visits one of our locations and one of their music instructors in recovery brings the drums, guitars, keyboards and other instruments needed to compose and play an original song as a group. The instructor explains their personal journey in recovery and how music has helped them overcome addiction and/or mental health disorders. Then, they write, play and record and original song together and upload it to the Rock to Recovery Soundcloud account. In total, Rock to Recovery has uploaded over 20,000 songs.
