Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behavioral TherapyApproaches to help patients overcome substance abuse and mental health disorders vary tremendously and some are more effective than others. Dialectical behavior therapy may be considered an offshoot of cognitive behavioral therapy designed to help people that experience intense emotions and mood disorders such as borderline personality disorder and those that experience suicidal ideation. Over time, however, this approach to therapy has been heavily researched and shown to help those with substance use disorder, depression, eating disorders, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder.

In the practice of DBT, therapists focus on five elements of the therapeutic approach. According to Alexander L. Chapman, Ph.D., in his article, Dialectical Behavior Therapy: Current Indications and Unique Elements,

“DBT is a comprehensive treatment that includes many aspects of other cognitive-behavioral approaches, such as behavior therapy (i.e., exposure, contingency management, problem solving, and stimulus control), cognitive restructuring, and other such interventions. As many of these interventions are very similar to those found in other treatments, the emphasis here is on those essential aspects of treatment that are relatively specific and unique to DBT, including (a) five functions of treatment, (b) biosocial theory and focusing on emotions in treatment, (c) dialectical philosophy, and (d) acceptance and mindfulness.”

Dialectical Behavior Therapy is widely recognized as a positive therapeutic approach that depends on active involvement between the therapist and the patient. In this process, the therapist guides the patient to not only understand the five unique elements of DBT, but to put the tools learned in each element into practice so as to improve mental health outcomes and to live in sobriety.

About Our Dialectical Behavior Therapy Approach.

The Treatment Teams in our programs are well aware of the positive outcomes that can be achieved by employing DBT in their practice. Moreover, they too understand, as the research reveals, DBT may be applied to a wide variety of disorders and, as such, this approach plays a critical role in individual therapy sessions and group sessions while in treatment.

Our Treatment Team consists of medical personnel, clinicians and counselors that have vast experience in utilizing this approach to achieve positive outcomes in both mental health and substance use domains. Collectively, these leaders in medical and behavioral health maintain over 100 years of experience in the field.
